Rant & Rave: walking your dog? Be careful with the stroller

RANT to the childless couple behind me at the bright Holiday Promenade at the Bellevue Botanical Garden, who brought a stroller for their little dog and kept kicking my heels from behind. I’m pretty sure dogs weren’t even allowed. Show respect.

RAVE to all the polite and pleasant people I have met in grocery stores lately. People were smiling and not in a hurry and everyone was wearing masks. Yes, there were disappointments with the ingredients, but no one fell in love because there was no organic whipping cream or sweet flaked coconut.

RANT to the new “style” of men wearing sneakers with business suits. Oh good?

RAVE to the person who hung small toys to assemble in small plastic bags with red and green string on a tree in the park of Ravenna. My 6 year old nephew noticed the tree on his way home on Christmas Eve after visiting Candy Cane Lane (another rave). He was delighted to walk around it with admiration. When I said I thought the person who decorated the tree intended the kids to take a toy, their response was, “Wow, that’s the spirit of Christmas! “

RANT to businesses that require you to have a smartphone to get a discounted price. Those of us who can’t afford technology need to save money the most.

RAVE to people bringing their parts to their local stores who really need them during this time of parts shortage.

RANT pedestrians on the wrong side of the road. When I was young we were taught to walk or jog on the left side of the road, facing traffic when there were no sidewalks. Now I see a lot of people turning their backs on traffic and walking on the right side of the road, paying more attention to their phones than vehicles – often wearing headphones. As long as the practice continues, we will continue to see more pedestrian tragedies on our roads. Please walk in front of traffic when there is no sidewalk available.

RAVE to the anonymous neighbor who placed the first ornament on the conifer near the entrance to our subdivision. You have launched a wave of good humor! A second rave to all the neighbors who added more decorations. The tree is now a delightful vacation home in the neighborhood.

RANT to solo drivers with “Please Be Patient – Student Driver” bumper stickers. If you were truly a student, you would have an experienced driver with you. While I try to be patient with all drivers, if you are not ready to drive in traffic with others, why are you on the road?

STORM Praise businesses and government organizations that offer a callback service instead of keeping customers waiting. Rant to businesses and organizations that drop the call after being on hold for what feels like an eternity.
