Although Labrador Retrievers have been America’s No. 1 dog for more than three decades, the active and intelligent poodle has made a strong comeback in the top 10 since 1997. The American’s Popular Dog Breeds Ranking Kennel Club just came out with some surprises. results. While dog breeding is still a debatable topic, purebreds and mixes are still growing in popularity.
The American Kennel Club is a non-profit organization recognized for its knowledge of the dog breeds, education and health. The AKC held its annual ranking of the most popular breeds on last year’s list of nearly 800,000 of race puppies and dogs.
Labrador retrievers are still America’s number one choice after 31 years, but there have been some surprising results. Poodles haven’t been in the top ten for 25 years. Now they’ve grown to 5and location.
In all, there were 197 featured breeds. Top 10 includes: Dachshunds (#10), German Shorthaired Pointer (#9), Rottweiler (#8), Beagle (#7), Bulldog (#6), Poodle (#5), Shepherd Germans (#4), Golden Retrievers (#3), French Bulldogs (#2) and Labrador Retrievers, also known as “Labs” (#1).
Lots of poodles
Poodles of all sizes were the most popular dogs for 22 years between 1960 and 1982, before declining in popularity. Now they have regained a top spot for the first time in nearly 25 years.
Poodles are intelligent dogs that have been used throughout history to find fresh water.
They are very active and complex, in addition they are good companions for people with allergic. Poodles can provide support to people in hospital and act as guide dogs for people who cannot see. They can hunt and even compete obedienceor other canine sports.
Poodles easily remember past behavior and can create high expectations for their owners.
What about doodles?
Doodles are a popular mix of poodle and another breed of dog. Examples of doodles include: golden doodles, a mix of golden retriever and poodle; Labradoodles, a mix of Labrador Retrievers and Poodles; and even Maltipoos, a combination of Maltese and Poodle.
The AKC governs many dog shows in the United States. He has not yet agreed that the doodle is a breed.
Brandi Hunter is a spokesperson for the AKC. She says doodle enthusiasts are trying to find a way to have the animal recognized as a breed.
The main requirement for recognition is the creation of a list of traits for the breed that become necessary.
“Predictability is one of the things that draws people to purebred dogs,” says Hunter.
Races move up the list
Although the list of popular dogs doesn’t change much from year to year, over time big changes can happen. Since 2000, eight breeds have slowly entered the top 25, such as the Great Dane and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi.
Some dog breeds quickly entered the top 25 such as French bulldogs and the cane corso, which only made it into the AKC in 2010.
The cane corso went from 51st at 21st within 11 years.
Cane Corsos are very large dogs. Their ancestors originated in the Italian countryside and they were used as farm defenders who could pull small carts and also hunt. This interesting breed also competes and can be seen on TV shows and music videos.
Dog Breeding Arguments
Voluntary purebred registrations have increased by 45% over the past 10 years. Many animal rights activists say there are problems with herders. Activists say breeders are more concerned with the appearance than the health of dogs.
They say create purebred supports puppy mills and increases the number of dogs left in shelters.
The AKC has defended itself and its partner breed clubs by saying it is concerned about dog health and breeding practices. The AKC says proper breeding has a purpose. This creates dogs with acceptable traits, such as size and the ability to smell. These traits help humans and adapt to different owners’ lifestyles.
