Steven P. Haenel, of North Smithfield, dies at 66

Steven P. Haenel, 66, of North Smithfield, died at Landmark Medical Center on January 21, 2022. Born in El Paso, Texas, he was the son of Paul and Phyllis (Pratt) Haenel and brother of Lance and Linda Haenel . He was a loving and devoted husband of Margaret (Fortune) Haenel for 30 years.

He is survived by his mother, Phyllis Davis, his stepfather, Bruce Davis, his wife, Margaret Haenel, his brother, Lance Haenel, and his children, Dylan and Felicia Haenel, Colleen Williams and Kayla Shewchuk. He also leaves several nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

Steven was an award-winning dog trainer for Charter, Kerry Hills and EP Kennels. He has won over a dozen awards for his dog training, including recognition in the Who’s Who edition (2005-2006).

Before retiring, he also worked for many years as a bus driver for Laidlaw Bus Co. and as a tourist bus driver for Academy Bus.

Steven was not only considered a hero to his family, but he also performed the Heimlich Maneuver saving the lives of two other diners.

He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, boating, hiking, and camping with his family.

The arrangements are entrusted to the Keene-Brown Funeral Home, 445 Greenville Road, North Smithfield. Services are private.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Steven’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
