Pokémon Go maker Peridot begins soft launch

Peridot, the next game from Pokémon Go maker Niantic, has begun rolling out via its recently announced soft launch.

So far, the cute Tamagotchi-like app has become available in Malaysia – and images of the early stages of the game have been released online.

About 10 minutes of user footage reveals Peridot’s opening tutorial, item shop, and a list of possible tasks to increase your creature’s happiness. These tasks include pointing your phone’s camera (and therefore your Peridot Pet) at specific objects like a flower, cat, or dog.

The Peridot tutorial teaches you how to pet your digital buddy for XP and draw a circle on the ground for your Peridot (or Dot for short) to search for food.

The game map shows nearby adult spots that are available to spawn. Tapping on one brings up its list of behavioral traits (such as “savant”, “stony face”, and “downright peachy”).

While playing with your Dot, you can give her commands to sit or float.

In this version of the game, there seems to be a limit to how many former pets you can track through Summoning Wisps, items you use to remember and reconnect with dots that have reached adulthood and then were released.

The in-game store lists various items for sale, including Seed Sprouts for faster growth, Summoning Wisps to summon more pets, and Nests that can help alter the appearance of raised offspring. .

A section also suggests that you will once again be able to accumulate in-game currency by undertaking basic tasks, such as walking 1 km, feeding and petting your Dot each day.

Eurogamer previously discussed the creation of Peridot and the difference with Pokémon Go with developer Niantic. For more on the game, our Peridot preview has everything you need to know.

It’s unclear when Peridot will be available elsewhere – when it hits Europe or North America, we’ll let you know.
