TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) — Now that temperatures are on the rise, parvo season is here.

Parvo is a highly contagious virus that is very deadly in unvaccinated puppies and adult dogs.

Pima Animal Care Center says they are already overflowing with parvo cases.

The best way to protect your pet is to keep them up to date with their vaccinations. If they are not vaccinated, keep them away from public places like dog parks.

Many of the parvo cases PACC sees right now come from owner buyouts. Without treatment, most parvo-related deaths occur within the first two to three days.

“You know a lot of dogs don’t survive, and all of that can be prevented with a $15 vaccination,” said PACC’s Nikki Reck.

Parvo is mainly seen in puppies, but they also see a number of adult dogs infected with the virus.

Reck says there are low-cost options for vaccines, but some barriers prevent some owners from getting their pets vaccinated.

“I think people either think it’s not as bad as it is or they don’t know if they have time to wait for the vaccines at the clinics which are more affordable because it’s It’s a bit long to wait and go to a veterinarian. office right now is very difficult,” she said.

Parvo is a tough battle to win, but decontaminating your home is even tougher. The virus can stay on clothing, leashes, surfaces and more.

“Getting rid of parvo inside and outside your home is a long process. It’s not free. You’re going to have to buy a special product that’s designed to kill the parvo,” she said.

Some signs of parvo to watch for in your pet include: loss of appetite, fever, and vomiting.

“You just need to know the behavior of your puppy or your dog. Anything out of the ordinary, you need to be alert if your pet is unvaccinated or in the process of being vaccinated if it’s a puppy,” Reck said.

Some of the parvo puppies PACC currently has are stable and responding well to treatment. PACC says these puppies would recover better in foster homes.

The PACC clinic can teach you how to treat them and provide you with all the supplies you need.
