Odds, 2022 Kentucky Derby predictions: Expert who won last year’s Derby Day winner reveals his picks

Zandon will look to prove why he is the 3-1 morning favorite when he competes in the 2022 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on Saturday. Trained by four-time Eclipse Prize winner Chad Brown, Zandon is coming off a victory in the Blue Grass Stakes on April 9 in which he rallied from last place to win by 2 1/2 lengths. The triumph came after being beaten by two other 2022 Kentucky Derby horses in its previous two races, when it finished third to Epicenter at the Fairgrounds in February and second to Mo Donegal at Aqueduct two months earlier. Epicenter is 7-2 in Kentucky Derby 2022 odds, while Mo Donegal and White Abarrio are both 10-1 in Kentucky Derby 2022 field. 6:57 p.m. ET. With the 2022 Kentucky Derby featuring the largest racetrack in North America, you’ll want to see what astute racing journalist and analyst Michelle Yu has to say before making any picks for the 2022 Kentucky Derby.

Few people in racing are as connected as Yu. A host and on-air journalist who has provided racing analysis for TVG, HRTV and the Breeders’ Cup, Yu has spent his life in racing. Prior to her television career, she worked for coaches Steve Asmussen and Ron Moquett. She is also married to Santa Anita-based trainer Ryan Hanson.

She also has huge crippling chops. In the 2011 Kentucky Derby, she correctly tabbed Animal Kingdom to win at a hefty 21-1. In the 2017 Breeders’ Cup, they beat Wuheida 11-1 away to win the Filly and Mare Turf. Last year, in a wide-open Kentucky Derby, she beat Medina Spirit, who crossed the finish line first, as the 12-1 winner.

Since joining SportsLine in November, her picks have cashed in six of 12 races, including the exacta Breeders’ Cup Classic. Everyone who followed her is upstairs.

Best Kentucky Derby 2022 Predictions

A surprise: Yu pitches Messier, even though he’s a top favorite in the 2022 Kentucky Derby at 8-1. In fact, Yu says Messier barely ranks in the top 10. Sired by Empire Maker, winner of the 2003 Belmont Stakes and named after NHL legend Mark Messier, the horse debuted in second place in last June by winning three of his next four starts. A 6-5 favorite in the Santa Anita Derby last month, Messier took the lead on the far corner but couldn’t hold off stable mate Taiba and finished second.

Messier’s most recent win came in February, when he finished 15 lengths ahead of Cabo Spirit in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes. His speed is undeniable, but Yu isn’t sold on his ability to win the 2022 1 1/4 mile Kentucky Derby. “I’m still not convinced he’s a horse that wants a ton of ground, and I think his good effort was made to look better because of who he was facing,” she told SportsLine.

Instead, Yu is high on Cyberknife, despite being a 20-1 long shot. Cyberknife was sired by Gun Runner, who finished third in the 2016 Kentucky Derby and had the third best pre-race odds at 10-1.

Cyberknife and Zozos (20-1) raced together in a practice session on April 30, and the former edged past his counterpart on the six furlong job with a time of 1:11.2. Both finished ahead of Classic Causeway, who raced in 1:13.2. Cyberknife showed determination in their victory after a slow start at the Arkansas Derby on April 2 and now appears to outclass their fellow 2022 Kentucky Derby contenders on the open track.

How to make picks and bets for the 2022 Kentucky Derby

Yu’s top choice is an overlooked horse that has “the speed to squeeze and the best connections”. Yu is also bred on a huge long shot which is her “go-to horse in Exotics”. She said this colt “showed race after race that he belongs in the Kentucky Derby.” She’s including these horses in her 2022 Kentucky Derby bets, and so should you. She shares horses to support only at SportsLine.
