Mondi’s bag packaging is fully recyclable

VIENNA, AUSTRIA — On June 21, Mondi Group announced that its mono-material pouches have proven to be successfully recyclable, as confirmed by the National Test Center Circular Plastics (NTCP) in the Netherlands. According to Mondi, tests have shown that polypropylene (PP) pouches can be sorted into the appropriate recycling streams, reducing waste.

Mondi has partnered with NTCP to perform tests using real-world scenarios. The tests were developed to investigate the sortability of Mondi’s mono-material PP pouches, including its pre-made autoclave and standard pouches, pour spout pouches and other tray packaging materials. Testing revealed that Mondi’s pre-made pouches were accurately detected and sorted in recycling streams.

“We conduct independent tests and experiments that help close the plastic cycle,” said NTCP director Marcel van Eijk. “By replicating real-life situations for Mondi, we were able to thoroughly assess the sortability of its packaging products. We were able to prove that top band and tray combinations can be recognized in different sorting streams and Mondi’s flat bottom pouches support sorting strategies that need to be developed and implemented on a larger scale.

Mono-material pouches were originally launched in October 2021 and are used in applications that require high-barrier protection, including wet pet food and processed meat products.

“The test results show that our mono-material PP packaging is recognized and classified in the correct sorting stream at advanced waste management facilities,” said Thomas Kahl, channel manager for consumer and industrial products at Mondi Flexible Packaging. “We are particularly proud that we have also been successful in demanding applications such as wet pet food pouches.”

The tests are part of Mondi’s MAP2030 sustainability program, which is committed to fostering circular solutions, developing innovative packaging and paper solutions, and preventing packaging waste. The company is committed to making its packaging and paper solutions fully reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.

To achieve its goals and drive sustainability throughout its supply chain, Mondi has partnered with CEFLEX and 4evergreen to develop sustainable packaging.

With the success of Precise Recycling, Mondi has set the standard for plastic packaging recycling streams, supporting high quality inputs to plastic recycling processes. But, according to the company, further development of plastic sorting sectors in Europe is necessary.

“To meet the plastic recycling targets set out in the revised Packaging and Paper Waste Directive, the sorting and recycling of plastic waste must be significantly improved,” Kahl said. “As a market leader, we are strongly committed to contributing to this goal by testing the sorting performance of our packaging.”
